Positive thinking brings positive results
This is mine and my husband’s new motto in life -Positive thinking brings positive results. Well, let me re-phrase this, this is HIS motto all the time and I am trying to learn it. I keep saying it so maybe it will stick! Let me back track a little here...
I wouldn't say I am a really negative person, but I do have times where I could be a lot more positive. I do believe that believing and thinking positively will bring better results. Not that life will be perfect by any means.
Let's be honest, it is a little overwhelming when you meet that person who is always upbeat and always "everything will work out" well sometimes it just doesn't. Really... life really stinks sometimes!!! I do not believe in being fake, and I do not believe in pretending like everything is fine, when it is not. There is a time to be sad, a time to grieve, a time to dance (had to throw that in because isn't life better when you dance more, just saying!). Most of us know this bible verse.
However, I really do believe in the power of positive thinking. I believe that if things are tough, you can find some good things through it. My pastor (Charles, truly one of my favorite people in this whole world) brought this up in church a few weeks ago and I wanted to stand up and cheer, because he was right. Something positive can come out of every situation. Him and his lovely wife Pat, had problems with their washing machine (water everwhere!) and he decided to find the positive things and make a list of them, it was awesome. What's funny is my husband and I had just had the same thing happen and we were ok with it because of our new motto. We were thankful that it wasn't worse. We were thankful we had the money for a new one and that it didn't ruin our floors. I like Charles’ idea of actually writing down the list, and will do that next time!
I will be down right frank here. There are some Christians who feel you have to be happy all the time and with every circumstance, like you’re "bad" or "wrong" if you’re upset about something. This really bothers me. I do believe some people are truly positive all the time and that is terrific when it is genuine and not for show. It does say to be joyful in the bible, but I am sure Jesus doesn't want you to shout "oh yes, my sister just died, hooray". What I believe He means, is to find the good that may come out of it and be thankful for that. No, to lose someone is NEVER good, but maybe you can be thankful you had that time with them. This is where I think people get confused. People sometimes feel they have to be okay during a time when they should grieve and you know what? It is okay to say that it's not fair, or that you’re upset or whatever. My point being, Life is not perfect and you do not have to act like it is, but if you can grieve and try to think of the good things that you do have, life will be a lot better, a lot more hopeful.
This is where Mitch comes in. He is very good at this sort of thing already. Sometimes I want to say "Hey just be upset with me!!!". He is not one to think you’re wrong if you’re upset, he has a good balance with it all… but he is good to let me be upset, say what I need to say, and then help me find the positive. This is definitely where soul-mates come in handy with strengths and weaknesses.
The other thing about being positive, not only does it help you get through rough times, it is better for your health. This is not in reference to a really sad event, it is good for you to cry/be sad/ grieve and get it out... but the "little things" in life, being positive is much better for you. What good does it do to be upset and angry all the time? Always thinking something bad is going to happen? Worrying about things that may never happen (oh yes, I am a worrier!!). It is funny to me how anytime you turn on the TV, it is speaking of positive thinking, love and light, being happy, etc. but yet the bible has been saying it this whole time:
Proverbs 17:22
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
These verses are so true and the principle applies whether you are a believer in God or not.
So, to sum it up, I know I, for one, am trying to be more thankful in life, to think more positively, and to look at every situation and find some good. Will I do this all the time? Heck no, I am human. But overall, it will increase my happiness and health in life. Not to mention, who wants to be sad all the time!!! Life is too short. Don't let the little things get to you so much and live life to the fullest.
Positive thinking brings positive results!
